F31 CID replaced

Black spots has appeared on the CID.
There is no fix for the screen, the unit needs to be replaced

During winter 2022, first appearance of some discoloration, did not think much of it.
But as soon as the temperatures started to rise closer to spring
the blotches grew.


Initial state.

Chose to ignore it for some time until it one morning had grewn into some seroiusly bigger circles.

Had some difficulty finding spare CID units that did not cost an arn and a leg.
Retail OEM order could cost between $700 and $2950

worst case needed to be programmed to the car.

During winter 2023 spots started to appear on the screen that were extremely intrusive.
Finally a CID appeared on ebay, used, for a bargain $50 with shipping.

State of the CID, time for replacement.

It seems to be a layer of fluid that has separated, the spots can be moved around.

Teardown

Facia popped loose with plastic panel tools


Gently pry.


Facia loose.

Started with a small bit in a hammer drill.
found an assortment of ballast that had been used. removing all porous material.

Screws exposed -remova them and make sure to have magnet ready.

Cables disconnected.


The spots are visible, screen off.

Seem that a hole to the outdoors was exposed, need to seal with gravel and stone until concrete can be poured.


Take note of cable routing

Pop the lower panel, remove screws.


Below head unit, remove panel.


HMI panel loosened.

CID screw removed, head unit needs to be pulled out to allow some
slack to help release the CID upwards.


Pulled out head unit.

Be extremely careful unhooking the fakra connector below display.
If you are unlucky it will hit and crack the windshield.

Installation in reverse, make sure no cables are pinched and the vents can be maneuvered.


the CID is ok.

It seems like no programming is needed, it only applies to the head unit in the case thet it is in need of replacement.
